Hi Madison Farmer! The heavy rainfall events you are noticing in New York are an indication that the climate is changing. According to Karl et al, 2009, the Northeastern US has experienced a 71% increase in the amount of precipitation falling in very heavy events (defined as the heaviest 1% of all daily events) from 1958 to 2012!
There are a few things you can do to start:
- Have you made improvements to the water holding capacity of your soil? Check out the Cornell Soil Health program for soil testing and recommended changes in management practices.
- Contact a local Cornell Cooperative Extension specialist or one of our CSF Extension Team members to get their input on practices you can put in place on your farm.
- Contact your local Soil and Water Conservation District staff for more ideas.
